Rick King attended Pasadena City College electronic music program,eventually transferring to Citrus College where he enrolled in a recording arts program. After graduation, he studied music composition privately for two years with Dr. Roger Weiss (UC Colorado Boulder), followed by one year of jazz studies with John Novello author of ‘The Contemporary Keyboardist’.After that he toured in Japan,playing and studying Gagaku, the traditional music of the Japanese royal court, and he studied Asian music in general as well. Rick also continued to develop his skill as a guitarist and worked with artists as varied as Tina Marie, Roy Hay (Culture Club), Ed Quintella/Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac),as wells as jazz legend Albert”Tootie” Heath (Heath Bros) and percussionist Steve Reid (Supertramp, Rippingtons). This eventually led him to pursue his other passion, composing for visual media, where he’s successfully worked on various film projects with Stan Ridgway, Paul Haslinger/Edgar Froese, and Larry Spangler. Rick has also completed scores for various TV shows and commercials including Levis, American Ocean Campaign (Ted Danson) and ABC. He has the distinction of winning the 2008 bronze Telly Award for best music in a documentary film and the 2009 British Academy Of Film And Television Arts best music in a short film with his two composer partners at Syncmasters. Rick is happily committed to the long tradition of musicians giving back to new players coming up, so teaching beginners to advanced with his knowledgable but easy going style is an on-going passion that makes music so joyous and fun.
